Writing Across the Disciplines.

  • English 105 Student Email

“All day I've been writing a paper for my Biology class about a gene called ACTN3 that supposedly determines your natural aptitude for certain types of sports. There are genetic tests parents can administer to their children to see if they are a carrier of the gene.

The assignment is to review current articles that address both sides of the debate and to come up with your own supported opinion of the topic. It's basically the EXACT same thing we did with genetically modified foods in class last unit!

It's strange because I feel like I'm much better prepared to write this paper because of the one we did in class. Just thought I'd let you know the skills you're teaching are already being applied :D Have a good weekend!”

“I have learned how to write from different perspectives and focuses. Specifically, writing from a scientific standpoint, professional correspondence, and creatively. I really appreciated working on the resume, cover letter, and cold emails. I will continue to use those throughout my career.”

“I have learned about other citation styles that I have not had much experience with and I have learned how to effectively do peer revisions. Learning how to interact with scientific articles and doing CSE citations will benefit me most in the future, especially because I want to pursue a career in the medical field.”

“Literally the nicest woman on the planet. She will help you with any assignment and work with you if you are struggling with anything. Just follow instructions, show up, and communicate and you will be fine.”

“Honestly, Ani's killing it!”

“Ani was an absolutely outstanding English professor. She made this such an enjoyable class while still having us do very useful and effective work. She has been my favorite teacher at Carolina this year.”

Remote & Asynchronous Instruction.

  • "Ani is a great TA/instructor! She is thorough in her teaching and finds time to know each student. Even when we went remote, she accommodated and was still present. I def recommend her for any class! Get ready to read, participate, engage in office hours, and learn how to write a good essay. She made me fall in love with English."

  • "I really appreciated Ani's respectful, friendly, and encouraging approach to students. ENGL 144 was an asynchronous class so I felt it was challenging to juggle the forums with the different assignments and due dates but Ani made it easier. I also appreciated Ani's generous and non–punitive late policy. She was responsive by email and I liked her weekly digests, which summarized key comments from the forums. I liked the different texts and movies that were selected. They really highlighted the topic/genre of each unit. I was exposed to movies/shows/texts that I wouldn't have read/watched myself but which I appreciated afterwards and discovered that I liked. I plan to watch the rest of the other Westworld episodes, for example."

  • "First, this was my favorite course to take this semester. Like many college students, I feel like I haven't learned much this semester, with this course being the major exception. Professor Govjian had a very unique layout of the course that allowed me to enjoy learning during this very difficult time. Her course inspired students to be creative and think outside of the box with components like choosing your unit project or Pinterest notecards. It was interesting how I was the most engaged in this class, in particular, considering we never met on Zoom. The discussion format was great and allowed me to me feel connected with other classmates. I appreciated the grade breakdown, as well. I like when professors have several ways to earn the grade you want. Most importantly, Professor Govjian was the most understanding and flexible person. I really appreciated her being lenient during these rough times. Her feedback on assignments was constructive and helpful. Great professor and amazing class (one of my favorites at UNC). 10/10! Very glad I took this class :)"
